China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom separately announced their 5G base station construction plans for 2020, the China Daily News reported on March 3. China Mobile is set to build a total of 300,000 5G base stations by end-2020 while China Unicom and China Telecom will jointly build 550,000 5G base stations in the first three quarters of 2020. China Broadcasting Network Corporation has not yet revealed its construction plan but is estimated to build about 50,000 base stations this year. By the first half of this year, China is projected to have 100,000 5G base stations across 47 cities in China. In addition, 22 provinces and cities in China such as Beijing (40,000 5G base stations), Shanghai (30,000), Tianjin (20,000), Guangdong (60,000), Jiangsu (55,000), and Jiangxi (50,000) have unveiled their construction plans for 5G base stations, the Economic Daily News reported on March 11. China’s MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) predicts the total 5G network construction in China alone will amount to 1.2 trillion RMB (US$175.2 billion; US$1= 6.85 RMB). Meanwhile, the global network construction investment is anticipated to total about US$1.3 trillion during the period 2019-2025, 75% of which will be allocated for 5G, MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute) estimated based on GSMA data. MIC is a government think tank and IT research institute in Taiwan.
